How to Rebuild a Pallet Jack

Pallet jacks are used in warehouses and many businesses. They slide under pallets of merchandise and can be pumped up to raise the pallet off the ground. The jacks can be pulled around by hand so the entire pallet can be moved to the desired location.

Pallet jacks are handy to have around any warehouse when a forklift or other machinery is not available. They are able to hold and lift heavy amounts of weight. The wear and tear of the merchandise can cause pallet jacks to become damaged. This can require the pallet jack to be totally rebuilt to regain its proper form.

Pull down and pump the handle of the pallet jack to raise it to its maximum height. Lay it down on its side. Take off the steer wheels and axle with an adjustable wrench and set them aside. Pull off the snap ring under the traverse on the stem of the hydraulic unit.

Turn the pallet jack upright and lower it back down to the ground. Push out the roll pin at the bottom of the handle that connects the frame to the top of the ram with a pin punch. Lift the frame away from the ram and pull it away from the hydraulic unit. Take off the ball on top of the ram and remove the hydraulic from the traverse to completely disassemble the pallet jack.

Rebuild the pallet jack to its original form. Slide the stem of the hydraulic unit back into the traverse. Slide the ram into the A-frame with the ball positioned on top of the ram. Attach the ram to the A-frame with the roll pin. Lay the jack down on its side and attach the snap ring to the stem of the hydraulic unit under the traverse.

Install the steer wheel assembly. Slide the wheel onto the axle and attach the snap ring. Move the axle into the bottom of the hydraulic unit and attach it with the fastening pin and roll pins. Slide the steer wheels onto the axle and attach the snap rings.

Flip the pallet jack back up and move it around to make sure it is sliding correctly. Pump it up and down and lower it to verify everything has been properly rebuilt.
